Frequently Asked Questions

MYOFUNCTIONAL THERAPY

“I have a tongue tie, will I need surgery/clipped/snipped/cut/released?”

It all depends on how the tongue tie is affecting your function and health.  Some  benefit from a RELEASE and others do not need it. For those that do need to be released, myofunctional therapy is recommended before and after the surgery to ensure the best results.

“Why do I need myofunctional therapy before and after a frenectomy (tongue tie surgery)?”

Therapy is recommended prior to surgery to stretch the tissue and allow greater access for the provider and to start developing strength and muscle memory in the tongue so that after surgery proper rest posture and swallow can be established. After the release is complete therapeutic exercises train the facial muscles and tongue to function properly now that tissues are no longer tethered. Therapy also helps to prevent reattachment of tissues as they heal.

Will I need general anesthesia for the frenectomy (tongue tie release)?”

In most situations, general anesthesia is not necessary. For most patients, local numbing is all that is needed.

“What is the healing time period after a frenectomy?”

The wound under the tongue typically heals fully in 3 weeks. Lip ties usually take only 2 weeks to heal.

“Does insurance pay for myofunctional therapy?”

Services generally are not covered by insurance and are fee for service.  We understand everyone has a budget and offer payment options.

“What is an appointment like?”

The first appointment is a comprehensive initial exam including health and developmental history, photos, measurements, functional testing, breathing evaluation, oral exam, tongue tie screening, and postural analysis.

Therapy appointments include revaluation of function, review of objectives, and progression of exercise strategies.

“What are the exercises?”

Various movements that promote neuromuscular patterns and oral sensory to increase tone and mobility and promote proper rest posture of the facial muscle and tongue.

“How many appointments will I need?”

Therapy programs are based on need, but generally range from 12-15 sessions.   Appointments are initially weekly and progress to biweekly before transitioning into a recall maintenance schedule.
